Jillian Travels to Utah for OEX Training

Jillian here from Apex Overland and I visited Utah in December 2021. I tagged along with Tony from Overland Experts. We did a private training course for two awesome women who are training to do the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles. I documented my trip and published a video on our YouTube so be sure to check it out!

We started at the Overland Experts facility to load up and go over some fundamentals of the vehicles that we would be driving. We then loaded the vehicles and secured the contents so that they would not shift around during the offroad driving that we would do on the way to our campsite for the night. We then headed out into the desert just south of Salt Lake City to the 5 Mile Pass OHV area.

Day 2 we continued our trek through the 5 mile pass OHV and learned how to read the terrain, make a plan to drive the obstacles within the trail and then adapt as necessary as we go. In the evening we made our way to the Salt Lake desert riding some on the Pony Express and then set up camp just as the sun set. Making dinner and eating by the campfire while chatting about our adventures and what all led us to this point.

Day 3 we woke up and enjoyed the beautiful sunrise over the mountain, got warm by the campfire while drinking coffee and we chatted about the previous day as well as what we wanted to accomplish on the last day. We refueled the vehicles, reviewed all the different types of ropes, and recovery gear, then we got a lot of seat time to experience what its like to drive in the dunes. We rounded out the day with a sand recovery and then some winching basics.

If you're ever looking for off-road training check out Overland Experts. They have different facilities in Connecticut, Virginia, North Carolina and Utah so reach out to them overlandexperts.com and look up a training course. They teach 101-fundamental courses for groups and they do more advanced recovery training and more.

If you want to find out more you can always reach out to us Apex Overland and we will be happy to send you in the right direction!
